Wallace Jesse CLARKE - (1887 - 1964)

[One of the] FOUR BROTHERS FROM NORTH LOPHAM
The four sons of Mrs. F. G. Clarke, of Ivy House, North Lopham, are serving with the forces. We give their photos, vis.: - (1) Private W. J. Clarke, motor fitter, Guard’s Division, British Expeditionary Force; (2) Lance-Corporal Friday L. Clarke, 1st Norfolks, British Expeditionary Force; (3) Private Bertie V. Clarke, Northumberland Fusiliers, British Expeditionary Force; (4) Frank S. Clarke, Signal man in the Royal Navy.

Wallace Jesse CLARKE, son of Frederick George CLARKE (1864-1912) and Barbara Constance MUSK (1866-1940), was born on 6 February 1887 in South Lopham, Norfolk. He was baptised on 17 April 1887 in South Lopham - parents Frederick George and Barbara Constance. Very little is known of Wallace's military service. The Norwich Mercury newspaper article refers to his service as with the Guard's Division. There is a medal index card that notes a Wallace Jesse as being in the Royal Army Service Corps. This may well be the same person. The term RASC Guards Division refers to the specialized units of the Royal Army Service Corps that provided essential supply, transport, and logistical support to the British Army’s (and the later Guards Armoured Division) during the major 20th-century conflicts. With this in mind it is likely that Wallace was Private M2/115647, Royal Army Service Corps. He died at St. James Hospital in King’s Lynn, Norfolk on 19 January 1964 - aged 76 years.
